FAQs

What is the Most Helpful Faculty and Staff poster about?
The poster is a compilation of all faculty and staff names, as indicated by freshmen and first year transfer students, in answer to the question: “Who has been most helpful to your success at Appalachian?” The “most helpful”  faculty and staff list was extracted from Spring 2013 MAP-Works student survey responses. Every effort was made to include all student responses indicating faculty or staff.  A great deal of editing occurred to include everyone possible without redundancies. Please forgive any accidental oversights or misspellings. Where can I get one? Please contact Belinda Ballew ballewbm@appstate.edu if you would like a hard copy of this poster. Or follow the link on the Faculty/Staff page.
Congratulations to everyone mentioned! You are truly inspirational! -Appalachian MAP-Works team

When should I make a note in MAP-Works?
Appropriate reasons for making a note in MAP-Works might include:

  • Roommate concerns
  • Lack of engagement (not involved)
  • Lack of study hours
  • Not going to class
  • Financial aid concerns
  • Not making friends
  • Time management concerns
  • Student intends to withdraw
  • Confused about major
  • Unsure of what courses to take
  • Homesickness
  • Family Problems
  • Death of a loved one
  • Relationship concerns

If you are more than moderately concerned, please feel free to make a referral to the Early Intervention Team. Referrals to EIT are not typically recorded in MAP-Works.

What should a MAP-Works note include?
MAP-Works notes should be restricted to first-hand observations. They should not make assumptions. Notes should be non-discriminatory, non-judgmental and non-diagnostic. For example, if a student arrives to an 8am class smelling of alcohol, an appropriate note would be "Stew Dent arrived to class this morning smelling of alcohol", not "Stew Dent arrived to class this morning drunk."

Who takes the survey?
All students (Freshmen and Transfers) new to the main Appalachian campus in Fall 2013 and Spring 2014 are required to take the MAP-Works survey.
